Abstract

This volume includes all of the Latin Easter ceremonies transmitted from the Middle Ages and the Early Modern era together with melodies that are currently known to researchers. The compendium offers a unified approach to both melody and text. It includes a total of 375 ceremonies from the 10th through the 17th centuries (and a few more recent offshoots) that originate from many parts of Europe. Each ceremony is individually edited together with a systematic commentary. Frequently, the editing has involved extensive corrections to the findings from earlier research. The findings in the individual commentaries are summarized in extensive surveys on both melody and text tradition. While the editorial research confirms the accepted typology of the ceremonies (Lange, Young, de Boor), the diversity of the findings demonstrates the need to make extensive differentiations within this basic typology. This work is sure to become a fundamental resource for research on Latin Easter ceremonies as well as the melodies from vernacular Easter and Passion plays.

Abstract

Described by the distinguished theatre director Peter Brook as 'a very powerful form of theatre', the Ta'ziyeh is the Islamic drama of Iran. This work examines the evolution of the Ta'ziyeh, which involved elements drawn from Zoroastrianaism, Mithraism, mythology, folklore and traditional forms of Iranian entertainment. In its final form, most of its elements - plot, character, thought, spectacle and song - derive from the Shi'a branch of Islam. Its main plot concerns the suffering and death of Imam Hussein, grandson of the Prophet of Islam.

Abstract

Religious drama was one of the most vital art forms of the medieval era. In medieval mystery plays, God appeared as one of the characters, along with angels, saints, the devil, and others. Until very recently however, the revival of interest in medieval culture has not included drama, beacuse of a lingering fear of blasphemy associated with the representation of God on the stage. In Britain this fear was the legacy of a theatrical censorship which has been exercised by the Lord Chamberlain's office for hundreds of years. Since that power was abolished in 1968, medieval religious, or mystery, plays are once again appearing on the stages of many countries.John R. Elliott Jr. studies the modern context of this important medieval genre. He begins by describing general attitudes towards religious drama from the time of the reformation, the popularity of the Oberammergaru Passion Play in Victorian times, and specific attempts by producers to overcome official hostility to religious plays. He traces the history of the major modern productions of the mystery cycles, such as the York Festival and the Bristol University performance of the Cornish Ordinalia, and provides information about the careers of the two leading pioneers of modern mystery-play production. The concluding chapter discusses the chief practical and aethetic problems involved in staging mystery plays for modern audiences, and assesses the overall importance of their revival in the larger context of British there today.

Abstract

This is a new critical and commented edition of the Planctus Magistrae Doloris, a vernacular old Veronese prose version of a Planctus Mariae that was copied in the second half of the 14th century. While a first transcription was published in 1891 by Gustav Oehlert, the current editor has succeeded in identifying the Latin version the vernacular text was drawn from, allowing him to clarify some difficult passages. Moreover, the author has established a stemma codicum of the three manuscripts that transmit the Latin text, illuminating the branch of the tradition on which the vernacular depends. This edition also contains a detailed linguistic commentary and glossary.

Abstract

The early-fourteenth-century St Gall Passion Play comes from the Central Rhineland. Unfortunately its music (over one hundred Latin and German chants) is given in the manuscript only as brief incipits, without any musical notation. This interdisciplinary study reconstructs the musical stratum of the play. It is the first full-scale musical reconstruction of a large German Passion play in recent times, using the latest available scholarly data in drama, liturgy and music. It draws conclusions about performance practice and forces, and offers a sound basis for an authentic performance of the play. The study applies musical and liturgical data to the problem of localizing the play (the first time this has been systematically attempted), and assesses how applicable this might be to other plays. It presents a detailed study of the distinctive medieval liturgical uses of three German dioceses, Mainz, Speyer and Worms. The comparative approach suggests how the music of other plays might be reconstructed and understood, and shows that a better understanding of the music of medieval drama has much to teach us about other aspects of the genre. The book should be of interest to literary scholars, theatre historians, musicologists, liturgical scholars, and those involved in the performance of early drama.

Abstract

The book is an anthropological study of a phenomenon observed within the range of contemporary Polish Catholic religiosity. The Crucified focuses on two fundamental issues: passion plays and performance theory. It presents an analysis of material collected during five years of field research, which sheds light on the varied world of religious performances. The phenomenon of passion plays is extremely complex and to some extent heterogeneous, hence its in-depth analysis reveals much not only about its own nature, but also about the entire modern religiosity. As a result, the book is constructed in such a way as to focus on a single phenomenon, but with conclusions extending to a much wider range of contemporary religious practices. The book reveals the need for self-expression of one’s own attitudes observable in contemporary spirituality, as well as the increasing participation of believers in the development of their religious life and thus in the formation of their own religious identity. All these processes are interpreted in terms of performance theory. Applying this approach makes it possible to capture the believers’ need for activity and creativity in the field of practices alternative to the liturgy.
